Kim the gaymer

If you have lived under a rock for the past 5 years and don’t know what a gaymer is, it’s simply a gamer who is gay. Duh. I don’t know the history behind the coining of that term but maybe it was created by a gay person who thought he was attractive or had a good fashion sense and wanted to distinguish himself from the stereotypical image of a gamer i.e. somewhat geeky, possibly obese and someone who dresses poorly.

Whatever the history and your sexuality is, the business of gaming is the fastest growing sector in the entertainment industry and is here to stay for a long time. By the way if you think gamers are hard-core dudes who do all-nighters in internet cafes, you’re sorely mistaken. If you’re into smartphone games a lot of which target females (think Angry Birds and Candy Crush), you’re considered a gamer too. Angry Birds went from a humble game on your mobile to a Hollywood movie so you can gauge from this the potential of this industry and how much successful game-developers stand to be paid.

I’m a gaymer myself if you don’t already know, both with smartphone games and those on consoles. Ever since the two major players in the field upgraded to their next generation consoles, I’ve wanted to follow suit but was waiting for their game repertoires to mature. Also there wasn’t much point in upgrading my first-generation Xbox 360 when I still had a crappy TV. So recently we nabbed a bargain and changed our full HD TV to a UHD 4K model. Your eyes can’t discern resolution beyond a certain extent so there’s really no reason to fork out that much extra for a newly-released model with enhanced resolution. The price of a TV drops drastically whenever its new model is released and by buying the older version, I got a very good deal on my 55” Sony Bravia.

Sony was the choice because it’s the best for gaming as opposed to other brands that are more optimised for movie-watching. Moreover Sony has just released its Playstation 4 Pro which makes it the newest available console in the market. It also boasts the VR or virtual reality option which I intend to pursue in the future. A lot of my gaming friends also recommended Playstation 4 over Xbox One which matched my extensive online research findings. All this culminated in my complete gaming upgrade before Christmas which was planned in advance so that I could play over the Christmas break.

Now you must think what an anti-social or lifeless person I am for celebrating the festive season in front of the TV playing video games. Well if that’s what you think, you don‘t really know gaming and the game I was (and still am) playing. This game took 10 years to make and is one of the most successful franchises in the world i.e. Final Fantasy XV. To give you an idea of how popular this game is, it actually released a full-length movie (Kingsglaive) as a promo. How many games manage to do that? The purpose of this post is not to sell games or TVs and consoles for that matter so I’ll not go into details of the game. However like all things in life, there are pros and cons with any decision or action and being a gaymer is no different and I do want to share what I think are the main ones.

The biggest advantage of choosing gaming as an entertainment option is its value for money. A new console game costs about $80 and that gives you hours of fun. A full-length game’s main quest typically takes 40 to 50 hours to complete and that doesn’t include the many other optional quests one gets to also enjoy. Imagine if you had spent those 50 hours socialising outdoors, how much more would that have cost you when you factor in the amount spent on transport, drinks, food and venue admission charges? As an avid and oft extreme saver who dislikes socialising unless it’s with close friends which I don’t have a lot of in Melbourne, gaming is an obvious choice for me. The Christmas period was also oppressively hot so staying indoors gaming away had the added advantage of avoiding bad weather.

As alluded earlier a lot of money is invested in the gaming industry and that goes into story- and soundtrack-development in addition to the creation of jaw-dropping graphics. With good visuals, plot and music plus the fact that you’re actually actively controlling how everything develops, gaming offers a far more immersive experience than watching a movie. After 50 hours of being a character, how can one not be invested in every aspect of him or her? I’ll be watching Kingsglaive again after completing Final Fantasy XV and I’m sure I’ll get a whole different array of feelings and emotions. I’m so looking forward to that.

All that being said, I still don’t choose to start a game willy-nilly as I know I’ll get addicted to it and lose track of other life priorities upon commencement. Although to me that’s the biggest con in gaming, I actually see that as a pro being too good. It’s because the game is made so well that it draws you in completely thereby causing that addiction. By the way I never ever compromise my fitness regimen for anything and gaming is no different but I must admit being stuck in front of the TV gaming your weekends away does reduce your overall activity level. You also tend to eat less healthily by choosing pre-packaged processed food (e.g. instant noodles, frozen pizza, etc.) that doesn’t require much preparation and so takes the minimum time away from gaming.

Whenever I embark on completing a game, the addiction means that my hermit mode is activated. Midsumma (i.e. Mardi Gras Fair Day for Melbournians) is on today and I am giving this major gay event a pass and choosing gaming instead. However this doesn’t mean that one becomes cut off from the world because most games have multi-player options nowadays and you can actually build friendships and relationships playing a game together online. Who is to say that is not a good thing? The other disadvantages I can think of are maybe over-stimulation causing poorer sleep quality if you play just before you sleep and blisters on your palm from using the game controller for too long a period. In my opinion these are minor compared to the hours of enjoyment one gets from gaming.

For your information I only presented the cons of gaming to balance things up as I personally don’t see any downside that will actually stop me from doing it. Of course having a husband that’s a bigger gaymer than yourself certainly helps and my being engrossed in my own game gives him his much-needed peace and quiet and so I’m sure he doesn’t have anything to complain about. That’s unless we’re both fighting to play the same game which rarely happens now that he has started the retail version of World of Warcraft which is another massively-immersive game which has a huge following.

So it looks like there’s nothing substantial between me and gaming and therefore onwards I go in my Final Fantasy journey. To conclude this post here are some screenshots (*** possible spoilers warning ***). I took from that game that I really like (especially the food ones!).

Being thankful on Facebook

In the second entry of my 2016 look back series, I've summarised the Facebook posts I've made for the past year that contain things that I'm either thankful for or make me happy. All this positivity is perfect for balancing the negative energy that emanates from the previous entry. With this balance now all is reset thereby putting in the best position to welcome the new year.

===============================================

I love these nights when I veg at home watching my downloaded videos waiting for my boo to come home from work. Totally relaxed but fully prepared to hop like a bunny to the front door at the sound of it opening.

The sound of fire crackers is finally ringing in the air heralding the impending arrival of the new year and in about nine hours, I will greet my mummy at the airport kick-starting her one-week stay to experience the vibrant new year festivities in a Western country for the first time. Happy Chinese New Year of the Monkey everyone!

Suddenly feeling the need to be thankful. Be thankful that you're throwing out thrash because it means that you have the financial means to own things to begin with. Be thankful that you have a warm bed to sleep in tonight (even luckier if it's with someone you love) knowing that there are many sleeping rough outside in wintry Melbourne.

For the first time in my life I've exchanged actual products with my frequent flyer points, all thanks to the numerous flights to and from Cairns for my Papua New Guinea assignment. $200 worth of free groceries here I come!

Boo will be back early and home soon!!! Elation drowned out questions and so excuse me now as I need to warm my arms up to prepare for major hugging later!

Do you know why my happiness level on Thursday mornings before work is comparable to a Friday evening when the weekend starts? Because that's when I'm furthest from my next gym visit, time-wise.

Even as an amateur song-writer who does it only as a hobby, I've gotten quite a bit of royalty so far from just one song since 2010. Imagine how much I can amass if I put my total heart and soul into it as a full-time song-writer!

All our stuff is now in at our new place. We have power, gas and hot water! A whole new page of our lives have officially started! Super excited but super tired as well!

It's a quiet night at home for me while husband's out enjoying himself. I'm so glad we can be equally comfy with being apart and being clingy when we're next to each other. It's a balance fine-tuned over the last 8 years and Ision and I are loving it!

For a nerdy engineer with a very limited social circle both online and in real life, to amass 180,000 blog hits is quite a feat. Now what should I post to really make the hits go through the roof I wonder...?

Breakfast boo made was so yummy and filling that I can do without lunch today and the extra calories that come with it. What a way to enjoy food without the guilt!

Last day of work before the Christmas break is now done! Final Fantasy XV I'll be visiting you intensively for the next 4 days!

It's always nice to find yourself on other people's blogs especially blogs that feature hot guys!

Advantage of being married #65: Free relaxing mutual massage sessions at home where you can moan to your heart's content.

Tried the nice ramen place just opposite our apartment. How lucky are we to live in Melbourne huh.

I used to compare myself with other guys in the gym who have hotter bodies than mine and get upset. Now I tell myself - as long as you are a regular gym-goer who is there to really work out, you're already better than 90% of the people out there. You don't have to set yourself up for failure with unrealistic goals.

Tonight I can finally taste the capability of the newest member of the family a.k.a. the slow cooker. Smells really nice booboo!

Being the only one topless at Pink Dot (yes, the ONLY one) I took so many pictures with so many people today it's not funny. If only I charged them per shot! But then again I'm a camera whore and I love all the attention so it's all good. It's such a good decision to come back just for this major Singaporean gay event. Love is love no matter who you are and nobody can deny you this love that you deserve. #PinkDot2016

An elaborate breakfast this morning greeted me when I woke today. Hope your married life is as blissful as mine! Baked eggs with vintage cheddar, Hungarian salami, tomato, parsley, garlic and onion plus portobello mushrooms pan-fried in butter and soy sauce, and toast.

I know I've been complaining a lot recently regarding a lack of work. I do know that I'm already much luckier than a lot of other people who don't even have a roof over their heads or an able body to look for a job in the first place. It looks like things are going to improve very soon though! #ThankingMyLuckyStars

Mummy asked hubby what he added in his mushroom breakfast dish that made it smell so good. The chef must be feeling proud! By the way the secret was butter, something not used in traditional Chinese cooking.

I was exploring my neighborhood after gym and I found the perfect jogging route. It's great that we live almost next to the Glenferrie Oval. I sense lots of outdoor cardio from now.

8 years ago today I stepped foot in Australia as a permanent resident for the first time and now I call this country home, for better or worse. Actually there is no "worse" as my life is now complete with Ision. However 8 years on the engineering industry is now in a very different place and steady employment at this point will make my life even more complete. Hope I'm not asking for too much here. Well here's to another 8 years!

Birthday dinner with hubby. And yes, I got my requested birthday present and have already started using it. Now on to my 39th year on this planet.

"Your drive and work ethic combined with your obvious skill has been a real benefit not just to us in the Production department but OSL, in striving for Operational Excellence, so thank you very much." This came from the highest-ranking person on site in Papua New Guinea. I think I did an OK job in my close-to-2-years there.

I've tried and tested the new WhatsApp video functionality (ABOUT BLOODY TIME IT'S MADE AVAILABLE!) and it's all systems go. I now finally don't need my obsolete iPhone 4 with me when I travel alone just to Facetime with boo!

A day of crisp country air followed by a night of restful sleep coming up. A good weekend it has been so far. Goodnight.

Step 1: Asking to collaborate with photographer. Step 2: Securing a time slot. Step 3: Body conditioning. Step 4: A little bit of tanning to add colour. Step 5: Waiting for the shoot to start. Step 6: Actual shoot. Step 7: Waiting for the pictures. Step 8: Final editing. Step 9: Posting the finished product. Step 10: Relishing the compliments. Guess which step I'm at right now? Mave hope it'll be a great one today!

"Why I love married life - reason #27:
Ision: There is leftover chicken and vegetable soup for you if you want it.
Me: Thank you boo!"

It's Monday again and I'm really thankful that I've a job to go to. No Monday blues here at all!  :)

Having a gorgeous muscular man of mixed parentage turning his head to gawk at you while walking and then bumping into other people... Priceless. Looks like I still got it!

Well I shouldn't be angry with hubby for buying that new iPad Pro because this means that I'll be taking over his old iPad 2.  :) #HaveToUseiTunesAgain #NotAnApplePerson

Mummy is back in Singapore safe and sound and that formally ends her Melbourne trip. Now that I've booked my flights home, I have to make a list of her best dishes that I need to savour when I'm there. Your mum's cooking is something that money can't buy and we should all cherish it as well as our time with our mums when we still can.

I'm thankful each and every day for not having children, otherwise I'd be a slave for them for the rest of my working life in a job I'm forced to like just so I can rise up the ranks and earn more to feed the people I brought to life yet have increasingly no time for.

===============================================

So there you have it, my 2016 in a nutshell. The reason why this second part of my 2016 look back series is posted on this new day of 2017 is to serve as a reminder to continue being thankful in this new year. Hope you've had a great time revelling wantonly in drunken merriment. Happy 2017!
